Division of Business and Economic Research, University
of New Orleans
The Division of Business and Economic Research at the University
of New Orleans (DBER) was establishes in 1963 for the purpose
of encouraging research activity in a variety of business
fields. The DBER provides economic analysis, forecasts, and
research studies for business, government agencies, media,
nonprofit organizations, and individuals. Research studies
conducted include analysis of gambling in Louisiana, landbased
and riverboat gaming in New Orleans, economic impacts of special
events, migration in Louisiana, population and labor force
projection, visitor profiles, and convention bookings.
As a primary participant in the Louisiana Census Data Center
network since the program's inception in 1978, the DBER regularly
collects socioeconomic statistics that are provided to private
firms and government agencies. It also provides technical
assistance, data analysis, referral services, and data use
consultation; conducts training in access and applications
of socioeconomic data; and performs and publishers research
on demographic and economic characteristics of Louisiana and
its component areas.
The DBER has also developed a quarterly forecasting model
of employment by sector and other local indicators for the
New Orleans metropolitan area. The results of this model are
related at quarterly news conferences and published in the
Metropolitan Report; Economic Indicators for the New Orleans
Area. As a result of its dedicated efforts, the DBER has become
the most widely sought authority in the New Orleans area for
economic and demographic information, analysis, and forecasts,
and plays and integral role in promoting economic development
throughout the state of Louisiana.
The DBER recently joined forces with the faculty of the Lester
E. Malakoff School of Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Administration
to form the Hospitality Research Center. This center works
with the tourism industry to help guide business and policy
decisions. It has conducted numerous studies for a growing
list of clients including: the New Orleans Metropolitan convention
and Visitors Bureau, the Louisiana Office of Tourism, the
Convention and Visitors Bureau of Greater Kansas city, the
New Orleans Tourism Marketing Corporation, the Baton Rouge
Area Convention and Visitors bureau, the Ernest N. Morial
Convention Center, and the National D-Day Museum.
The DBER staff consists of Janet Speyrer, Associate Dean
for Research; Patricia Connor, Assistant Director; Christine
Carll, Research Analyst; Melinda Schegmann, Marketing and
Development Coordinator for the Hospitality Research Center;
Jamie Fisk, Project coordinator; Karen Brakel, Office manager;
and several valuable student research assistants.
