AUBER 2005: Missoula
AUBER's annual fall meeting will be held in Missoula, Montana,
October 8-11. I know. I know. Your first thoughts of Montana
in October are of icicles, budget-busting plane fares, and
stuffy motel rooms.
Let's talk about the last worry. The conference hotel is
the Holiday Inn-Parkside. It is located on the bank of the
Columbia River's Clark Fork. It is probably one of the few
luxury hotels in North America where you can fly-fish for
18-inch rainbow trout right out the back door. But you'll
want to be sure to explore the historic downtown area's shops
and restaurants.
Second, Missoula is not served by Southwest. But if you buy
your ticket early, prices are reasonable. For example, as
of the end of May, online roundtrip fares were $339 from San
Francisco, $358 from Dallas-Fort Worth, and $369 from Detroit.
These prices are certain to go up, so book early.
Finally, about those icicles. The National Weather Service
reports the average highs for early October to be in the mid-sixties.
Bring a coat, but you can leave your parka at home.
Conference
program planners Jerry Conover and Stephen Smith are putting
together an exciting array of topics and sessions. The conference
will run from Sunday to Tuesday noon. Those attendees traveling
to the East Coast can leave Missoula early Tuesday afternoon
and be home that evening.
