AUBER 2005: Missoula

October in Missoula! There is likely to be a dusting of snow on the mountaintops. The aspen and the larch will be in full color. Under a clear sky, the highs will be in the upper sixties. Missoula is a perfect place for AUBER’s annual fall meeting, scheduled for October 8–11.

  • For history buffs, Lewis and Clark came through here twice, and two campsites are within 30 minutes of downtown Missoula.
  • For those who like to fly-fish, world-class opportunities are available throughout western Montana. You may even wet your line right outside our conference hotel.
  • For out-of-shape and weary bureau staff, downtown Missoula has numerous watering holes—including the Oxford, which boasts a poker game in continuous operation since 1893.

Traveling to Missoula is easier than it may seem, with Delta, United, Northwest, and Alaska all offering nonstop service. The city is not served by Southwest, but paying only $90 per night at the conference hotel, the Holiday Inn Missoula-Parkside, may recoup some of the airfare. Book early to get the best fare.

Program organizers Jerry Conover, Indiana University, and Stephen Smith, University of Memphis, are creating an exciting selection of workshops and sessions that will appeal to all bureau staff. The conference program will begin on Sunday morning (with the possibility of a workshop or two on Saturday), and conclude by mid-day on Tuesday. Those traveling to the eastern time zone can make it home by Tuesday evening. Our field trip will be to one of the oldest wildlife refuges in the nation, the National Bison Range, which was established in 1908. Dinner will be served on the Flathead Reservation, with entertainment provided by tribal groups.

Start making your plans today. Conference program and registration materials will be published in the July issue of the newsletter. We’ll see you in Missoula.
