This year's annual meeting will
present how-to information for researchers, research
communicators, and administrators alike. Specifically,
the fall 2003 program will focus on what AUBER organizations
do. First and foremost: research. What new and interesting
projects are members engaging in? What's happening at
federal statistical agencies? Second: communicating.
How can centers effectively present research results?
What's the right balance between printed and electronic
dissemination? How can centers design a Web site that's
easy to update and that will keep users coming back?
Third: administrative issues. What do our deans (and
universities) expect from us? How can you create an
entrepreneurial enterprise and survive in a world of

The Eberhardt School of Business
at the University of the Pacific is seeking a Director
for the Business Forecasting Center. The Center is a new
entity that will build on the research and forecasting

It seems only yesterday
that I became the president of AUBER, but already I am writing
my final column for the newsletter. They say that time flies
when you are doing something you enjoy, and I will confirm
that is true. For this final column, I thought I would address
a question that I was asked several times as the secretary/
treasurer and then more recently as president. The question
posed was, "What personal characteristics should one
look for in a center director?" This question is frequently
asked by colleges of business contemplating opening a center.
I pondered over this question and thought I would spend
a few minutes addressing some of the personal characteristics
that I believe are necessary for success. While I do not
believe this list is in any way comprehensive, I believe
