Highlights of the NABE and AUBER 2003 Washington Economic Policy Conference

Grant Received

The Center for Real Estate and Economic Development in the College of Business and Public Administration at Old Dominion University received a grant from the Commonwealth Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation to study the nature and scope of common interest communities (homeowner associations) in Virginia. The one-year award is for $104,697.

The L. William Seidman Research Institute in the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University is the current incarnation of the original Bureau of Business Services, which was established at then Arizona State College in 1951. The Bureau (with a name change to the Bureau of Business and Economic Research) operated as the single research/public service unit of the ASU College of Business until the 1980s, when the college adopted a more decentralized, entrepreneurial model, and several additional centers with specific areas of specialization were created. In the spring of 2004, BEA plans to release the results of comprehensive revisions of state personal income and of local area personal income. These revisions will incorporate the results of the upcoming comprehensive revision of the national income and product accounts (NIPAs), which is scheduled for release in late 2003. Continued...

If you didn't attend the spring AUBER/NABE meeting, you missed an excellent opportunity to hear current relevant information about national economic policy. I found the remarks by Ben Bernanke, a governor in the Federal Reserve System; John Snow, the newly appointed Secretary of the U.S. Treasury; and (although depressing) Anthony Cordesman of the Center for Strategic and International Studies to be particularly insightful. The sessions were well organized, valuable, and well received according to all the AUBER members I interviewed. Continued...
