Regional Modeling in the Brave New World
of NAICS
The new North American Industry Classification System
(NAICS) provides a new and more up-to-date pair of glasses
to wear in trying to make sense out of what is happening
in a local or regional economy. In many cases, the continuity
between past and present is lost, and there are other
challenges. This session draws on expertise of Global
Insight and REMI to better understand some of the difficulties
created by the NAICS conversion and to get some practical
tips on doing regional analysis and modeling in this new
statistical environment.

Reynis, University

To Print or Not to Print?
With resources becoming more scarce, how does an agency
choose where to cut costs? Recent trends have forced organizations
to eliminate printed publications. However, there is an
alternative: online publication. The Bureau of Economic
Analysis shares its experience in online publication,
including the bureau's decision to publish online, how
to publish online, and the products the bureau offers.
Helpful hints and suggestions for others interested in
publishing online will also be shared.

at Boulder

REMI and Transportation Analysis
REMI has developed a new methodology to evaluate transportation
effects. REMI's TranSight software integrates transportation
demand models with the REMI model's economic geography
to produce an editable report suite. The integration enables
TranSight to quantify the contribution that transportation
investments make toward creating and expanding industry
clusters, which are main drivers in sustaining, diversifying,
and accelerating regional economic development. TranSight
also adds value by estimating and including emissions,
safety, and fuel usage as regional inputs to the economic
assessment for transportation projects.
